How to hear your heart's voice again

Why we sometimes hear voices

In this article, I address a topic that is close to my heart in the truest sense of the word. Everyone speaks of it, it has been referred to everywhere for generations, somehow it seems to be omnipresent, but what actually is the voice of the heart? And how can we learn to hear her and build an even deeper relationship with her?

It has to come from the heart, what should work on the heart.
Johann Wolfgang von Goethe

The voice of the heart is also often called the inner voice, intuition or colloquially gut feeling. It's not about talking to yourself, it's about experiencing yourself, accepting and loving yourself completely. I think if I had told my former self that I would eventually write an article about the voice of the heart, it would have just shook its head.

Too cheesy, the mind said to everything where even the word “heart” appeared regardless of the medical context, after all the heart is a vital organ, how can it even speak? “Impossible!” said my previous worldview. For years, despite intense emotions, I mostly trusted my mind. First and foremost, for me it was always about making sensible decisions because for me they symbolized security, protection and a regular life.

The uneasy feeling that was always clearly felt when making one or two “sensible” decisions was simply repressed as an emotional reflex. Trusting my inner voice was a slow, intensive and unusual process, but one that gradually changed my life for the better. Here you can find out how you can use your inner voice to experience your life even more intensively, happier and more balanced and what options there are for perceiving and interpreting it.

What does the voice of the heart want to communicate?

In the noise of the present, it's pretty loud. Opinions, calls, unfiltered and filtered information, advertising and so many different voices pour out from all directions that one quickly feels lost and disoriented. With so many possibilities, there is suddenly no compass anymore. Everything is too much, too fast and maybe even too meaningless. In these moments and phases of your life, the voice of your heart is your personal and, above all, individual guide and your best friend. But it is much more than that: Because the voice of your heart is always there for you, it is deeply anchored in you and it only wants the best for you and YOUR life. Because it is part of you and part of the divine creation that is deeply rooted in you throughout your life. It is your inner compass, so to speak. An important sliver of the universe that connects you forever with creation, gives you strength and the necessary decision support to achieve the best possible for your life.

At this point, many people ask themselves why they cannot hear the voice when everyone is supposed to have this voice? This question is not as difficult to answer as most people think. On the one hand, some people forget over time how to perceive their inner voice. Because the inner voice is anything but rational at first glance. While we act much more intuitively as children and are therefore also more open to the inner voice and accept it as it is, doubts increasingly arise with adulthood. Other things gradually come into focus. Above all, other people's expectations of oneself, but also permanent competitive thinking. At school we are taught certain standards by which we should measure ourselves. We learn that when we do something, we get encouragement and love.

This achievement-oriented way of thinking is further reinforced by teachers and relatives. But like everything in life, such a thought pattern does not only bring advantages. From an early age we are trained to live up to other people's expectations until they become our own expectations of ourselves, with little knowledge of how certain expectations affect psychic life. However, the expectations of others not only affect the psyche, but also the mind. We often do not notice the creeping process consciously but subconsciously. At some point, this manifests itself in the feeling that something is wrong, for example when the inner workings suddenly cannot harmonize with the outside world.

In such situations, the voice of the heart is used. She fights for our own needs, for the things that are good for our soul, make it stronger and blossom. But often the voices of the environment, i.e. the voices of relatives, friends, acquaintances but also of social expectations, are much louder than the voice of the heart. Although it is occasionally heard faintly, it is inhibited by the weight of the countless expectations of other people and ways of life. How can you still hear them and why should you listen to them at all? It pays to listen to the voice of the heart because it wants our best possible happiness. The voice of the heart leads us to our personal values, it reveals our true passions and reminds us of our original being. And there are many ways to reconnect with your inner voice.

Learning to be alone with yourself

In der Ruhe liegt die Kraft

Sound easy? But being alone is difficult for many people. The fear of the feelings that arise when you are alone with yourself is too great. When it suddenly becomes very quiet around us, it becomes all the louder inside us. Things are reflected that get lost in the hustle and bustle of everyday life but can truly bubble beneath the surface. You may feel called upon to come to terms with your feelings, but this is not always easy or pleasant. But exactly this step is so important because in this way we finally get into one dialogue with ourselves can kick. That's what working on yourself is all about. And it is sometimes one of the most difficult but at the same time one of the most beautiful tasks in life that we can face. But as soon as we become clear about who we are and who we want to be, then we can actively shape our lives as we imagine them to be.

Sometimes it helps to know who you are not and don't want to be. There comes a moment in your life when you can really enjoy being with yourself. To be completely with you. So you can listen deep into yourself, into the voice of your heart. Warmth will spread through you and you will become yours down to your fingertips inner truth sense. Being with yourself is like a small and sometimes big revelation straight from the subconscious every time. When feelings, goals, intentions and motivations suddenly find their place, when the complex dissolves and is reduced to the essentials, namely you as a living and loving being. Then new worlds and paths open up until you realize how many borders are only drawn in our thoughts and are not as real as they seem at first glance.

"Sometimes you have to walk through the storm to see the sun again"

Release blocking beliefs

Certain beliefs can limit a person's potential, keep it small and block their personal creativity. Such beliefs are the result of experiences that everyone has individually in the course of their lives. These can be painful or even traumatic experiences that can trigger deep fears and blockages. The voices of these experiences are usually much louder than the voice of the heart. They act as a kind of protective mechanism and primarily ensure survival. At this point it helps to know that even unpleasant blockages are basically something completely natural and primarily have a protective function.

When a person has experienced something bad, both body and mind try to do their best to ensure that person's survival. A protective mechanism develops that goes far beyond experience. But it doesn't always have to be the worst experiences in life that downright sabotage you. It can also be destructive manifested beliefs from everyday life, such as the feeling of being worthless or helpless until these emotions are deeply believed.

The inner voice reminds us that the power is within us and not outside. That we don't have to be victims. It reminds us of our true worth, no matter where we come from or where we are going, no matter whether we have a lot or little material possessions. It reminds us of our original state and that we are the creators of our own lives. Before man there was no money, no currency. Man invented all of this and unfortunately, especially nowadays, the impression arises that man is not worth as much as financial prosperity.

Yet without people there would be no financial prosperity at all, because we define value. We are the source of all civilization's inventions. Before that, man was and is. Therefore, never forget your precious, priceless worth in this world. As long as you have yourself, believe in yourself and your wonderful powers, your life can unfold. Your most precious treasure is yourself, from which flows all the strength and energy that can change something, that can touch other people and help them. Give yourself a hand and always take good care of yourself. This is the only way you can function, live, truly love and reach other people again. Be your own rock in the surf. That's what you're here for. Replace blocking beliefs with self-love. Your inner voice tells you all this. Maybe still very quietly, maybe you don't hear them so clearly yet. But try to untie the knot in your soul little by little and then you will discover how wonderful you are. Just the way you are.

The power of music

Whenever I listen to music, the world changes for a moment for me. Music has personally led me to my inner voice. It inspires my imagination, gives me answers to complex questions, suddenly makes difficult things very easy and exerts a hypnotic power on me. Music has always been one of my biggest sources of inspiration in life. When I'm feeling scattered, I turn on my favorite songs and feel myself piece by piece putting myself back together. For me, musical notes are the waves of the inner voice, and the inner voice, like a pro surfer, rides that wave to reach me somewhere deep in my subconscious.

When I listen to music that I like, I not only hear the inner voice, I see it. In images, characters and sequences. Being able to feel music leads to a wonderful emotional ecstasy. Many artists let themselves be brought to the shores of their new works with the help of music. And so do I. Each of my favorite songs has inspired me to create a new poem, image or text. Music can bring us closer to the divine, but it can do much more: It reveals to us that the divine is all around us and especially within us.

Profession or vocation?

Which job really suits you?

The voice of the heart is often very clearly noticeable in professional life. And mostly when we feel really good, fulfilled and balanced or when we feel really bad, unhappy, drained and permanently ill. In the first case, it confirms that the profession we are pursuing is probably the right one. In the second case, it gives signals that the current professional situation cannot remain as it is. If a job only gets on your nerves and your life energy, then something is wrong. In such cases, the inner life usually does not match the outside: It can be personal ideals that do not correspond to a specific company philosophy or the strong urge to do something meaningful instead of pursuing a profession only for financial reasons.

The voice of the heart is merciless in such situations. The more it is ignored, the more signs are sent that it cannot go on like this. And at this point, many make the mistake of just continuing to ignore them. However, this decision can even lead to the fact that sooner or later one feels physically or mentally ill because, for whatever reason, one pursues an activity that does not fit one's personal nature and only wears one out. there is every difficult situation in life is a gift, because just because it doesn't go in one direction doesn't mean there's no way out. It's a bit like driving a car: if you can't go in a certain direction, you can simply steer in a different direction instead of hitting a wall.

The voice of the heart not only draws our attention to what we can change in our lives, it can even change the perception and feeling of situations that seem tricky or inscrutable at first glance. She is a solution finder and motivator at the same time, who asks you to be courageous and to allow what is really good for you. If you listen to the voice of your heart, you rarely end up in just one job, you even find your personal calling. And a calling is as individual as a fingerprint. Because only YOU know what is really good for you, so the opinions and expectations of others don't matter at all, because these people don't have to get up for you every morning to pursue this profession, because these people don't live your life every day the way you live it . And if you shape your life according to your own ideas, then your environment will also benefit from it because you are more balanced, happier and mentally stronger.

In this way you will find the strength to be there for others, to support or inspire them. Because yes, work can be fun! In Germany, one increasingly has the feeling that one is not allowed to have fun at work, there is almost an urge to have to justify oneself. Why actually? There are jobs that are really fun and even happy, jobs that don't feel like work. And if you feel called to work as an employee in a small supermarket because you love the work and are not aiming for a career in the classic sense, then it's fabulous, just as if you feel called to work in the fire brigade as a woman or as a man Dancing ballet is wonderful too. The inner voice knows no prejudices and there are no limits in the vocation. Because everything you do with heart and passion will turn out well.

Out into nature

We find answers in nature
Advertising

There is no greater master than nature. And the good thing is: We ourselves are also nature! That is why we are forever deeply connected to her, even if many people are no longer able to perceive this connection as intensively as they are actually able to. Nowadays there tends to be an increasing separation between man and nature, which is not entirely true, because we humans are natural beings and carry nature within us. This means that everything we create has its actual origin in human nature and we also bear responsibility for everything we create. As an individual, but also as a collective. Nature gives us strength and answers, calms and inspires us.

That is why it is so important to be in nature as often as possible, to feel it again, to respect it, to draw strength and to perceive this deep connection again. Because nature is always talking to us - be it a leaf in the wind or the flapping of a bird's wings. Life is constant communication. And just as we hear the voice of nature, we also hear our inner voice, because it is part of this wonderful creation and because it is able to translate things for us that the mind cannot comprehend. It acts as a translator and interpreter of complex relationships that go beyond the human mind but can very well be perceived on a higher level of consciousness.

Yoga: find your inner voice

Another wonderful way to reconnect with your inner voice is to practice yoga. In yoga we learn to simply be who we are and gradually build a loving and mindful relationship with body, mind and environment. In this way, inner blockages are released, positive energy can flow better again, body and mind are connected and we also become more receptive to the inner voice. To truly feel good, it is important to exercise, love and regularly care for both body and mind. Heavy things become lighter step by step and you feel increasingly balanced and grounded. Balance is sometimes one of the best prerequisites for hearing your inner voice and regaining basic trust in life. Yoga is not a sport but a whole philosophy of life that can have a positive effect on all areas of life.

Meditation – Reduction for inner enrichment

Similar to yoga, meditation has a positive effect on all levels of life. In meditation, as in yoga, seemingly complex things are reduced to the essentials. And it is precisely this type of reduction that represents a great enrichment for everyday life. Because only in silence do the essentials come to light. And we learn that the inner voice is also the necessary silence. Then Silence is the basis for fresh energy to flow, we can find peace and serenity and achieve new clarity. And as different as we are, there are so many different forms of meditation. Be it lying down or sitting, with a guide or even in motion - there is the right meditation for every personal taste.

Minimalism - what do you really need

Less materialism means more wealth in the soul. It's good to only keep the things that really make you happy, instead of trying to fill inner emptiness with consumption all the time. Because the latter behavior only leads to a brief feeling of happiness, which wears off very quickly and can never really satisfy inner longing. Much more it promotes a kind of addictive behavior. In this way, people try to be happy, at least temporarily, but sooner or later they fail.

The motto "Less is more" is difficult to reconcile in today's consumer society, in which more and more is produced than is really needed. But each and every one of us can make a small yet effective difference. What you no longer need can be donated, for example, or given to friends who enjoy it. Regular sorting out, be it in our thoughts or just at home, helps us to create clarity, has a liberating effect and shows that the true value is within us and not outside. It proves that we are able to be happy with far fewer material things than advertisers are telling us on a day-to-day basis.

It helps to realize that advertising not only wants to sell products, but also concrete feelings that the customer should feel when buying the product. Of course you can treat yourself, but if everyone starts measuring personal happiness solely by things they can buy, it only leads to collective loneliness and an endless competition that is impossible to win. We can only find true abundance within ourselves and in spiritually enriching relationships. The less our thoughts are occupied with consumption, the more space the soul has and the more receptive we become to our true needs.

"Show me your friends and I'll tell you who you are."

How the inner voice wants to guide us to beneficial and inspiring relationships

When it comes to relationships, the rule is: quality over quantity. Who are your friends? How do you feel in her presence? Are they enriching friendships or rather exhausting ones? Familiarity is a beautiful thing, but it should not be confused with true connection. Therefore, it is important to take a closer look at our relationships with other people from time to time. Do we feel comfortable around the people around us, or do we hold on to certain relationships just out of habit? Does the present connect us to these people or only the past? Development requires courage and excludes comfortable standstill, because life also means continuous movement.

There's this saying that says "If you're the smartest person in the room, then you're in the wrong room." We are in the world to learn from each other. And every time we feel like we're stuck in a relationship, blocked by it and it just doesn't feel right against all sense, then the voice of the heart speaks to us in these moments. The voice of the heart supports the inner urge for movement, progress and development. This is not a call to radically dissolve relationships that may no longer fit one's own worldview or that have stalled, because relationships can be dynamic, changing and creating new spaces.

But it can be an inner challenge to deal with encounters more carefully and in a more reflective manner. Because with every encounter we immerse our thoughts in the exchange with other people. For a short or sometimes longer period of time, our thoughts absorb the energy of this encounter. And this energy can either give us strength, motivate us and give us a real boost of happiness, or it can also tire us, trigger inner doubts and block personal development. It is therefore important to meet people who inspire you, touch you in a certain way or just make you feel good.

These are fruitful relationships from which the most beautiful stories can arise. Just as the voice of the heart is used as an alarm signal in destructive relationships, it also speaks to us in particularly harmonious encounters. It makes itself felt through a feeling of warmth, connectedness and happiness. She reminds us humans that we are the designers, the artists of our own lives and that only we, each personally, have the choice with whom we want to spend our time on earth and with whom we want to open our hearts fully.

As you can see, there is a wide range of possibilities and very specific situations in life to hear your inner voice or to perceive it even more intensively than before. Only you can find out for yourself which of the methods listed above are suitable for you personally. Perhaps you also have other suggestions as to how, when and where one can best hear the voice of the heart. I'm curious about your experiences and look forward to your suggestions.

  1. I used to find it very difficult to make decisions and had to experience in a painful way what it means to not make a decision. Something has changed in me since then, also due to the loss I experienced through not making the decision. I've learned to listen to my heart. When it comes to fundamental or important decisions, I now know what to do. Somehow there is always an inner drive towards the things that are right for you. You just feel it when you have to do something or let something be better. You just have to trust what your inner voice tells you. I think that trust is the key. Kind regards, Andre

    1. Hello Andree,

thank you for sharing your valuable experience. Basically, every loss, every painful experience can also be a gift at the same time, a nudge or sometimes even a powerful nudge in the right direction.
The voice of the heart does this every day: pointing the way, questioning and helping to make decisions so that they are in line with one's values. As you write, it is a trust in life.

      Best regards,
      Lina
