The federal state of Vorarlberg with its capital Bregenz is located in the west of Austria and has something in common with Baden-Württemberg, the federal state in Germany we come from: It is nicknamed “Ländle”.
The Vorarlberg region is known for its breathtaking landscape, impressive mountains and green valleys. And one jewel stands out in particular: the Brandnertal. We visited in the middle of summer and were able to enjoy numerous hiking trails and the fresh mountain air in sunshine and clear skies. In winter, however, the valley turns into a wonderful winter paradise with a modern ski area and more than 64 km of ski slopes. Cross-country skiers also get their money's worth here with perfectly groomed trails.
The Walliserhof is located in the middle of Brand and has a history dating back over 100 years. The hotel was founded in 1896.

Holiday with dog in Vorarlberg
We particularly like the fact that the Hotel Walliserhof allows you to bring your four-legged family member with you. Especially because we have recently become dog parents to our little whirlwind dachshund Archie. We met several families with dogs. Hike to the Lünersee in the Brandnertal
The Lünersee, also called “the Pearl of the Alps” and idyllically located on the edge of the Brandnertal in Austria, is a stunning mountain lake surrounded by majestic peaks. The Lünersee was once an old mountain lake (one of the largest natural mountain lakes in the Eastern Alps), which became one of the largest lakes in Vorarlberg due to the dam built in 1959 and makes an important contribution to green energy through hydropower. The pumped storage power plant of the Lünerseewerk was for a long time the largest pumped storage power plant in the world with 280 MW (1 megawatt = 1 million watts)!
We set off for Lünersee early in the morning. The mountain station is only a short 10-minute drive from the Walliserhof. The cable car ride up to a height of almost 2.000 meters offers an impressive natural backdrop. And once we got to the top, a variety of different hiking routes awaited us, for example to the Schesaplana, the highest mountain in the Rätikon. However, due to the high temperatures, we opted for a leisurely 2-hour hike around the Lünersee.
This hiking route is 6 kilometers long and runs along the banks of the Lünersee. Most of the route is almost flat, with steeper ascents and descents only to the left and right of the dam (the hiking trail is therefore not suitable for strollers or wheelchairs). The scenery is simply breathtaking, which is why it took us more than two hours (our camera was almost burning from taking so many pictures). On our hike we stopped off at the Lünersee Alpe, where we drank fresh buttermilk in the sun. It couldn't be fresher, because the cows were standing right next to us. Simply wonderfully delicious!

Nestled in the beautiful nature of the Brandnertal, the Walliserhof is the perfect starting point for exploring the impressive mountains, but also for relaxing hours amidst the alpine tranquility. For us, it was the ideal place to switch off, recharge our batteries and leave everyday life behind us.
