Discover the weather in Mauritius

What is the weather like in Mauritius? The small island in the Indian Ocean is surrounded by turquoise, crystal-clear water and is known for its paradisiacal, white sandy beaches. With its pleasant tropical climate, Maritius enjoys warm temperatures all year round and can explore the beauty at any time of the year.

The weather in Mauritius is characterized by the mild, tropical conditions of the Indian Ocean, which prevail all year round. The island enjoys a pleasantly warm climate characterized by two seasons: a warm and humid period from November to April and a cooler and drier period from May to October. Occasional cyclones can occur during the summer months, but these rarely affect travel plans. Average temperatures vary between 25°C and 33°C, with the coolest months being July and August.

Summer time: November to April

The summer months in Mauritius are characterized by warm sunshine and a lively atmosphere. Temperatures reach highs between 25 and 33 degrees Celsius during this time. This period is particularly suitable for water sports activities such as diving and snorkeling as the sea is pleasantly warm. However, please note the higher humidity, which is particularly evident in January to March.

Winter time: May to October

The winter months bring milder temperatures and pleasant weather conditions. The average daily temperatures are between 18 and 25 degrees Celsius. This is the ideal time to explore the island's rich nature, be it through hikes in the mountains or strolls through the botanical gardens. The lower humidity makes these months particularly pleasant.

Cyclone season: January to March

There is a possibility of cyclones in Mauritius during the months of January to March. Heavy rainfall and stormy conditions may occur during this time. It is advisable to heed local weather warnings and check travel plans if necessary.

Weather in Mauritius: when is the best time to travel?

Choosing the best time to travel depends on individual preferences. The months of April to June and September to November are often considered optimal travel times as the weather is pleasant and the island is less crowded. This is a perfect time to enjoy the stunning beaches and discover the island's cultural treasures.

At this time the temperatures are still pleasant and the humidity is not yet too high. In addition, there are few rainy days during these months. The maximum daytime temperatures are between 25 and 30 degrees Celsius, at night it cools down to around 17 to 21 degrees Celsius.

During the dry season, the water temperature is on average between 24 and 27 degrees Celsius - for us the temperatures in April were already pleasantly warm and we didn't have a single rainy day during the day. The so-called southern winter period (from May to October) is the main season in Mauritius due to the very good weather conditions (lots of sun and few rainy days). If you want to go easy on your wallet, I recommend April as a travel month, the temperatures are pleasantly warm and the number of rainy days is already decreasing.

Rainy season in Mauritius: From December to April

Rainfall often occurs in the rainy season from December to April. Tropical storms can also occur in the months of January to March. We were in Mauritius for 10 days in April and didn't have a single day of rain. Thanks to constant, pleasant water temperatures all year round, a beach holiday in Mauritius is basically possible at any time of the year.

It is important to note that Mauritius is a tropical climate zone. There is high humidity all year round.

Climate & geographic location of Mauritius

Mauritius is approximately 1.800 kilometers from the African continent and 870 kilometers east of Madagascar. The nearest neighboring island is La Réunion, about 200 kilometers away. This means that Mauritius is south of the equator in the southern hemisphere and the seasons are opposite to ours (in Germany). The summer time extends from November to April and the winter time from May to October.

Best travel time Mauritius

Mauritius has a pleasantly tropical climate (humidity on average 80 percent) that only has two seasons: the warm, humid summer (from November to April) and the drier and approximately 5 degrees Celsius cooler southern winter from May to October.

Differences depending on the location in Mauritius

During the summer months, the amount of precipitation and the number of rainy days are also highest. There is an increased risk of cyclones (tropical storms), particularly from January to the end of February. Overall, the east coast of Mauritius is considered to have much more precipitation than the west coast (which lies in the so-called “precipitation shadow”).

Holidays in the rainy season in Mauritius

There is actually no real rainy season in Mauritius, but summer is generally rainier than winter. However, this does not mean that it rains every day during this period, but that showers can occur from time to time. If you definitely want tropical warm weather on your vacation to Mauritius, December is an ideal month to travel to Mauritius.
