Experience Schlosshotel Hugenpoet: Weddings, events & moments of enjoyment in a historic setting

Sometimes you don't need a flight across the English Channel to feel like you're in the South of England. Between old walls, ivy, and gently rustling trees, a place in the Ruhr region surprises with an atmosphere that could have come straight from an English country house novel.

Sometimes you don't need a flight across the English Channel to feel like you're in the South of England. Between old walls, ivy, and gently rustling trees, a place in the Ruhr region surprises with an atmosphere that could have come straight from an English country house novel. The natural stone facade of Villa Türmchen, the soft light in the early evening, the terrace directly on the water – reminds us of a summer day in the Cotswolds. Yet we are in the middle of Germany in the Hugenpoet Castle Hotel, one of the most romantic and extraordinary wedding locations in the region.

The Schlosshotel Hugenpoet – A unique bridge between past and present

As soon as we cross the arched bridge, we feel as if time is passing more slowly. The castle hotel is nestled in the green Ruhr countryside, just minutes from Essen, very well connected but still feels light years away from everyday life. Despite the proximity to urban life, a stay here feels like a little journey back in time. For many years, the castle has been owned by the von Fürstenberg family, who, with a keen sense of hospitality and quality, have created a special retreat.

As a member of the collection Fine private hotels Schlosshotel Hugenpoet is one of a select group of hotels distinguished by personalized service, exceptional ambiance, and culinary excellence. A young team continually contributes fresh ideas and ensures that Schlosshotel Hugenpoet is constantly evolving. This keeps the historic venue vibrant and open to new perspectives – especially when it comes to creative wedding concepts and extraordinary events.

Of toad pits and royal houses: The story of Hugenpoet Castle

Although the name "Hugenpoet" immediately brings to mind poets and thinkers, it primarily has a geographical origin. From Middle Low German, "Hugenpoet" [ˈhuːɡənˌpoːt] translates as "toad's puddle," referring to the swampy terrain that once characterized the Ruhr Valley. The history of Hugenpoet dates back to 778, when the property first appeared in documents. The Baroque building we know today was rebuilt in 1647 after being repeatedly destroyed. Even though the castle has reinvented itself over the centuries, its walls still retain a palpable sense of bygone times.

Since the 19th century, Hugenpoet Castle has been owned by the Fürstenberg family, who have preserved this historic gem to this day with a keen eye for detail and a sense of style. In the 1950s, the property was transformed into a hotel and is now one of the region's most charming hideaways. The moated castle has been a listed building since 1985 and has since preserved not only its impressive architecture but also the stories hidden within its walls. Today, timeless charm meets stylish design. The result is a unique place that makes history tangible while simultaneously inviting you to arrive and feel at home.

Events at the Schlosshotel: Terrace opening on May 1st

The Schlosshotel Hugenpoet is an ideal address for special occasions, as the atmosphere makes events here simply that little bit more extraordinary. A particular highlight is the terrace opening on May 1st. We were privileged to be there this year and couldn't have welcomed May 1st better. With perfect weather, the terrace transformed into a little summer dream with live music, delicious snacks, and a relaxed get-together. We were particularly impressed by the lovingly designed food and drink stations: creative delicacies from the castle kitchen, elegant canapés, and, as a special highlight, wine from the charming wine van of the Korrell winery.

Those who would like to enjoy such moments more often should definitely take a look at the hotel's other events program. Picnics take place in the castle grounds every Saturday and Sunday from May to September. Another highlight is the champagne tasting with Charles Heidsieck, which takes place at the Hugenpoet & Friends Store in Rüttenscheid. Here, you can enjoy fine champagne in a relaxed atmosphere.

One hotel, many worlds: Rooms & accommodations at Schlosshotel Hugenpoet

The castle hotel also offers a perfect retreat for your stay around the celebration. The 36 individually designed rooms and suites combine historical elements with modern comforts, without falling into clichés. The rooms and suites at Schlosshotel Hugenpoet are as unique as the castle itself. No two rooms are alike – some stately with antique furniture and high ceilings, others hyggelig and modern with views of the greenery. Whether as a wedding night location or a romantic retreat for a weekend for two – each room tells its own story.

Villa Türmchen – A temporary home

We were privileged to move into the romantic Villa Türmchen and were immediately captivated. Even from the outside, the small castle looks like a cottage in southern England – covered in ivy, with turrets, olive trees at the entrance, and a romantic terrace surrounded by greenery right by the water. The magic continues inside: an inviting living and dining area with an open fireplace, a charming country-style kitchen, a guest toilet, and, on the upper floor, a spacious bedroom with a view of the moated castle, as well as an elegant bathroom with natural light and plenty of space to relax and unwind.

Fine dining in the castle: The taste of the region on your tongue at Restaurant 1831

Anyone who tries the menu at the "1831" restaurant will quickly realize that this isn't just about cooking. The asparagus with wild garlic and passion fruit or the magnolia spritz aperitif made from the blossoms of the castle's magnolia tree are just two of the highlights that demonstrate the finely tuned and creative way in which regional and seasonal ingredients are used. Many ingredients come directly from the restaurant's own herb garden, such as the rhubarb for the light, floral dessert with violet ice cream and jasmine. A refreshing combination that practically tastes like spring. No wonder Gault Millau has already awarded it two toques. And we're keeping our fingers crossed for the first Michelin star, because it would be absolutely deserved.

The ambience? Elegant, yet pleasantly modern; located in the left-hand conservatory, the 1831 is ideal for a dinner that will definitely linger in the memory and on the taste buds. But there's also plenty to enjoy beyond fine dining: Housed in a former stable, the "Remise" bistro combines a cozy atmosphere with charming bistro cuisine. And in summer, nothing beats a glass of wine on the terrace overlooking the magnificent castle grounds.

Slow Mornings at the Castle Hotel: The Etagere Castle Breakfast

When traveling, there's little we love more than a hearty breakfast in beautiful surroundings. At the Schlosshotel Hugenpoet, the morning begins with a view of the water and the expansive castle grounds. A selection of fine delicacies is piled high on lovingly arranged tiered stands: fresh pastries, homemade spreads, fresh fruit, smoked salmon, and little seasonal surprises. Served with a creamy cappuccino and freshly squeezed orange juice. Everyday life? Suddenly feels so far away.

Hugenpoet & Friends

Since the beginning of the year, Hugenpoet & Friends has been bringing a breath of fresh air to Essen-Rüttenscheid. The concept store is part of the Schlosshotel Hugenpoet and is run by sommelier and host Marion Nagel, who combines her 13 years of experience in Michelin-starred restaurants with warm hospitality.

Here, you'll find a hand-picked selection of delicacies and wines that will provide a true explosion of flavor. Regular wine evenings and tastings offer the opportunity to discover new favorites and let Marion and her team whisk you away to the fascinating world of wine. Those who crave more can truly relax at events like RÜZeit – sourdough bread, dips, olives, and the perfect glass of wine.
