Our trip to Slovenia also took us to Koper, an extraordinary port city that many travelers might simply overlook, although this coastal town is anything but inconspicuous. Medieval architecture and Mediterranean flair blend here to create a distinctive atmosphere. Those who take the time to explore the narrow streets will quickly discover that Koper holds some exciting surprises.

Venetian heritage on Slovenia's Adriatic coast
The Old Town surprises with its Venetian palaces, the magnificent Tito Square, and the imposing Koper Cathedral, which rises majestically above the rooftops. Koper is reminiscent of Venice—no wonder, as the city was under Venetian rule for centuries. Between the 13th and 18th centuries, the Republic of Venice shaped Koper not only politically but also architecturally. Many of the impressive palaces and buildings in the Old Town, such as the Pretoria Palace and the Loggia Palace, bear the unmistakable Venetian Gothic style. The narrow streets, lined with magnificent facades and ornate balconies, and the large main square are reminiscent of the heart of Venice, only in a quieter, less crowded setting.

A day in Koper
As we stroll through the winding streets, we sense the lively hustle and bustle and the salty scent of the sea constantly in the air. Around every corner, there's a small café or restaurant tempting with Italian-inspired dishes. A perfect blend of Slovenian warmth and Mediterranean serenity. The harbor, in particular, where fishing boats and luxury yachts moor side by side, conveys the feeling of having arrived in a city steeped in history yet still boasting a modern lifestyle.

Sights in the City of a Thousand Suns
The magnificent Tito Square, surrounded by the Pretoria Palace and the impressive Cathedral of the Assumption of the Virgin Mary, is the heart of the old town. The cathedral is, incidentally, the largest church in Slovenia. A stroll through the winding streets leads to the tall bell tower, which offers a fantastic view of Koper.

The taste of salt
A special highlight was the visit to Barba Sol: In his small, cozy shop, Davor Podbevšek has dedicated himself to salt and developed an innovative process for producing exceptional herbal salt. During a salt tasting, we were able to sample various flavors – from delicate Mediterranean herbs to intense chili salt.

Accommodation in Črni Kal, Koper – Villa Robida
The Villa Robida is a boutique hotel designed with great attention to detail. The rooms and apartments are inspired by the Istrian landscape and
from the founders' memories of visiting their grandparents. They reflect the warmth and coziness of traditional Istrian houses, but with a modern twist. Each room is individually decorated, making your stay particularly unique.

The pool area, surrounded by olive trees, invites you to relax and offers a tranquil atmosphere. There's also a private VIP sauna and spa area.

Don't miss breakfast when you visit, because here you can find the most delicious pistachio croissants far and wide.

Restaurant tips
Koper has a lot to offer gourmets! In addition to the classic restaurants, there are true culinary gems serving local specialties. The fish restaurants, serving fresh seafood straight from the Adriatic Sea, are particularly recommended. A stroll through the city takes you past inviting taverns where seasonal ingredients are used.
Socerb Castle – Fairytale place with impressive views of the coast
Socerb Castle sits high atop a hill, offering breathtaking views of the coast. The castle ruins date back to the 11th century and tell stories of times long past. The restaurant was closed because we arrived on a Monday, but even a stroll through the grounds felt like a little journey back in time. The surrounding hiking trails invite you to explore the natural beauty of the picturesque landscape. On a clear day, the view extends as far as Trieste.

Kraški Rob Restaurant – food like mom’s
Located on the edge of the Karst region, Gostilna Kraški Rob in Črni Kal combines Mediterranean and Central European cuisine in a down-to-earth way. Many dishes are reminiscent of traditional family recipes, lovingly prepared and without frills. Hosts Darijo Franca and Milan Jakac create a warm atmosphere that is immediately inviting.

Boat restaurant Stellamaris Fish Cantina, Koper
The Stellamaris Fish Cantina boat restaurant in Koper offers a truly unique experience. Located directly on the water, it serves fresh fish dishes prepared with love and traditional recipes. The relaxed atmosphere and views of the waves make dining an unforgettable experience. Furthermore, great emphasis is placed on regional ingredients and sustainable fishing.

A day in Koper
Simply passing by Koper would be almost criminal for anyone who appreciates something special. The compact old town, the immediate proximity to the sea, and a cuisine that combines regional ingredients with Mediterranean lightness create a magical atmosphere. A closer look reveals a unique place that combines history and the present in a relaxed manner. Anyone who lingers here quickly realizes: It's not always the well-known hotspots that leave the strongest impressions.
